A common rule of thumb: keep rent near 30% of your income before taxes.

How much rent can I afford?
A common rule of thumb is about 30% of your monthly income before taxes. On $4,200 a month that is $1,260. If your other bills or debts are high, aim lower; the "What's left" side shows what you would really have after rent and bills.
How do roommates split rent fairly?
Three common ways: equally, by room size (a bigger room pays more) or by income (each person pays the same share of what they earn). Pick the one everyone agrees on; the calculator makes the shares add up to the exact rent.
Should bills be split by income too?
Many couples split bills by income and roommates split them equally. You can pick a different way for rent and for bills.
Why do the shares sometimes differ by a cent?
When a total can't divide evenly, the leftover cents go to whoever had the biggest fraction, so the shares always add up to the exact bill.

Do utilities count in the 30%?
People do it both ways. If your rent includes utilities, compare the whole amount; if not, add your bills on the "What's left" side to see the full picture.
