Every new laptop is suddenly an “AI PC”. Here is what the chip inside actually does, what the TOPS number means, and whether it should change what you buy for a home office — using real chips from machines we have already researched.
What is an NPU? It is the question every laptop listing in 2026 now forces on you, because you will trip over the same three letters on every spec sheet. NPU. It sits in the spec sheet between the processor and the memory, usually with a number attached — 45 TOPS, 48 TOPS — and almost never with an explanation. The badge on the lid says AI PC or Copilot+ PC, the price is a little higher than last year’s model, and nobody tells you what you are paying for.
So let us fix that. This guide explains what an NPU is, what it genuinely does today, what it does not do, and — the part most articles skip — whether it should change what you buy for a home office. We will use real chips from machines we have already researched rather than hypotheticals.
What Is an NPU? The 30-Second Answer
- An NPU is a Neural Processing Unit — a third processor on the chip, alongside the CPU and GPU, built to run AI tasks using very little power.
- TOPS measures how many trillion operations it can do per second. It is a capacity rating, not a speed you will feel.
- Microsoft’s Copilot+ features require an NPU rated at 40 TOPS or more. Below that line, a machine is not a Copilot+ PC no matter how new it is.
- What it buys you today: better video-call background blur and eye contact, live captions and translation, on-device search, and local image tools — all without sending data to the cloud, and without hammering your battery.
- Do you need one? For email, documents, spreadsheets and browser work: no. It is a genuine nice-to-have, not a requirement. If you live on video calls, or you care about AI running locally rather than in the cloud, it starts to matter.
What an NPU actually is
Your computer already has two processors doing general work. The CPU is the generalist — it handles the operating system, your applications, and anything that needs to happen in a strict order. The GPU is the brute — thousands of simple cores doing the same operation across huge blocks of data at once, which is why it draws graphics and, as it turns out, why it trains AI models.
The NPU is a third specialist. It does one narrow category of math — the matrix multiplication that neural networks are built from — and it does that at a tiny fraction of the power the other two would need for the same job.
That last part is the whole point. An NPU is not there because a CPU or GPU cannot run AI. They both can. It is there because running AI on them is expensive in watts, and watts are battery life, heat and fan noise. On a laptop that matters enormously.
The practical consequence is continuity. A GPU can blur your video-call background beautifully and cost you ninety minutes of battery doing it. An NPU can do the same job quietly in the corner of the chip for hours. Features that were technically possible before become practical now — not because they got faster, but because they stopped costing you the afternoon.
Why now, when NPUs are not new
Here is the part the marketing leaves out: this hardware is not a 2026 invention. Your phone has had a neural accelerator for years. It is what recognizes faces in your photo library, separates you from the background in portrait mode, transcribes voice notes and runs the keyboard’s predictions. None of it was ever called an AI PC, because on a phone it was simply how the camera worked.
Three things changed at once on the laptop side. Chip designers found the space and the power budget to include a meaningful accelerator in a thin-and-light machine. The models themselves got small enough and efficient enough to run usefully on that hardware rather than requiring a data center. And Microsoft built operating-system features that assume the accelerator is there, which gave manufacturers a reason to fit one and a badge to sell it with.
That sequence is worth understanding because it tells you how to weigh the feature. The hardware arrived because the software was ready, not the other way round. What an NPU is worth to you depends entirely on whether you use the software that needs it — which is a much easier question to answer than any number on a spec sheet.
What TOPS means, and why 40 is the number that matters
TOPS stands for Trillion Operations Per Second. It is the headline figure manufacturers quote for an NPU, and it is best understood as a capacity rating rather than a speed — closer to the horsepower figure on a car than to how fast you actually get to work.
The reason 40 keeps appearing is that Microsoft drew a line there. To carry the Copilot+ PC badge and run the on-device features that come with it, a machine needs an NPU rated at 40 TOPS or above. That single threshold is why the 2026 laptop market split in two, and why two machines that feel identical in an office can be on opposite sides of a marketing divide.
What an NPU actually does for you today
Here is the honest list. Not what it might do in three years — what it does now, on a machine you could buy this week.
Video calls get genuinely better
This is the strongest case, and it is not close. Background blur and replacement stop looking like a cut-out with a halo around your hair. Automatic framing keeps you centered as you move. Eye-contact correction makes you appear to look at the camera while you read your notes. Voice isolation strips the dishwasher out of your audio. All of it runs continuously, on battery, without the fan noise that used to make these features a false economy on a call.

Real-time captions on any audio playing on the machine, including translation into English from a long list of languages, running locally. For anyone in international meetings, or anyone who simply reads better than they listen, this is quietly excellent — and because it is on-device, it works on a plane.
On-device search that understands intent
Searching your own files by describing them rather than remembering the filename. This is the feature with the widest gap between demo and daily reality — it works, it is genuinely useful when it hits, and it is not yet the thing that sells the machine.
Local image and creative tools
Generating and editing images on the machine, plus AI-assisted tools inside creative applications that increasingly offload to the NPU rather than the GPU. For light creative work this keeps your laptop cool and quiet. For heavy creative work, a discrete GPU still wins and will for the foreseeable future.
Privacy, which is the underrated one
Everything above happens on the machine. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is processed on someone else’s server, nothing requires a subscription to a cloud service to function. For anyone handling client information, medical records, legal documents or anything under a confidentiality agreement, that is not a minor detail — it is the whole argument.
It is also the benefit least likely to appear in a product listing, because it is hard to photograph and impossible to put a number on. A manufacturer can print 48 TOPS on a box. It cannot easily print “this transcription never left your laptop”, even though for a great many professional buyers that sentence is worth considerably more than the number.
The quiet one: it keeps working when everything else is busy
There is a less obvious benefit that only shows up under load. Because these tasks run on dedicated hardware rather than competing for CPU time, they carry on working when the rest of the machine is busy. Your background blur does not stutter because a spreadsheet is recalculating. Live captions do not drop out because a browser tab decided to wake up. On a machine without an NPU those features share the CPU with everything else, and they degrade exactly when you are busiest — which is precisely when you notice.
What Copilot+ actually includes, feature by feature
“Copilot+ features” gets used as though everyone knows what is in the box. Here is the actual list, with an honest note on each, because some are genuinely good and some are demos.
Windows Studio Effects
The camera and microphone layer: background blur and replacement, automatic framing, eye-contact correction, portrait lighting, voice focus. It works at the system level rather than inside one app, so it applies to Teams, Zoom, Meet and anything else that uses your webcam. This is the strongest item on the list and the one most likely to change your day. It is also the one you can evaluate in ten seconds by switching it on.
Live Captions with translation
Captions for any audio playing on the machine, with translation into English from a long list of languages, generated locally. Useful in international meetings, useful in noisy rooms, useful for anyone who processes text faster than speech. Works offline, which is the part that surprises people.
Recall
A searchable timeline of what you have had on screen, so you can find something by describing it rather than remembering where it lived. This is the most discussed and most contested feature on the list. It is opt-in, encrypted and local, and it has still made a lot of people uncomfortable — particularly anyone working under a confidentiality obligation. Our view: treat it as off unless you have a specific reason to want it, and if you handle client data, check your obligations before enabling anything that indexes your screen.
Cocreator and image tools
Image generation and editing running on the machine rather than in the cloud. Genuinely convenient for quick visuals, and the on-device part means no upload and no per-image cost. Not a replacement for professional creative tools, and not pretending to be.
Auto Super Resolution
Upscaling to improve image quality in supported applications. Narrow support and a modest effect for most office users. Fine when it applies, not a reason to buy.
Improved Windows Search
Finding files by describing their contents rather than knowing the filename. When it works it feels like the future. It does not always work, and the gap between the demonstration and a Tuesday afternoon is real. Expect it to improve.
NPU or graphics card? The local-AI question, properly answered
This deserves its own section because it is where the most money gets misspent, and because the honest answer is “it depends” in a way that is genuinely explainable.
If you want to run AI models on your own machine — a local language model, image generation, transcription of long recordings — you have three routes, and they are good at different things.
The NPU route
Efficient, silent, runs on battery, runs continuously. Limited to smaller, optimized models. Perfect for the always-on background tasks Windows uses it for. Frustrating if you were expecting to run something large.
The discrete GPU route
Fastest by a wide margin for anything heavy, and the only sensible option for large models on a Windows machine. The constraint is video memory: a model has to fit in the graphics card’s VRAM, and that is a hard ceiling rather than a soft one. Draws real power, generates real heat, and on a laptop it means the fans and a shorter afternoon.
The Apple unified-memory route
Structurally different and worth understanding even if you buy Windows. Apple Silicon puts the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine on one chip sharing a single fast pool of memory. There is no separate VRAM ceiling — a model can use a large share of the machine’s total memory. That is why a MacBook can hold larger models than a Windows laptop at similar money, and why people running local AI on the move keep ending up on Macs. The cost is that it is macOS only, and that memory is fixed at purchase with no upgrade path ever.

What an NPU does not do
This section exists because most coverage skips it, and it is where the buying mistakes happen.

How to check whether your computer already has one
Before you shop, find out what you are already holding. Plenty of machines bought in the last two years have an NPU that their owner has never knowingly used.
On Windows
The quickest route is Task Manager. Open it, go to the Performance tab, and look down the list on the left alongside CPU, Memory, Disk and GPU. If your machine has a supported NPU, it appears there as its own entry with its own activity graph — and watching that graph move while you turn on background blur is the clearest demonstration of what this hardware does that you will ever get.
If nothing appears, check Settings → System → About and read the processor name carefully. Intel Core Ultra, AMD Ryzen AI and Snapdragon X parts carry NPUs. A plain Core i5, Core i7, or a Ryzen model without the AI designation generally does not. Where Windows recognizes a machine as meeting the full specification, a Copilot+ section appears in Settings that simply is not present on other hardware — that is the most reliable single indicator, because it reflects Microsoft’s own assessment rather than your reading of a model number.
On a Mac
Every Mac with Apple Silicon has a Neural Engine, so if your machine has an M-series chip the answer is yes. Apple does not surface it as a separate entry the way Windows does, and there is no Copilot+ equivalent to look for — the features that use it are woven into macOS rather than badged.

Work backwards from what you do rather than forwards from the spec sheet.

The consultant who lives on calls. Six hours a day on video, often from a hotel room with a window behind her and a corridor outside the door. For her the NPU is not a nice-to-have, it is the difference between looking professional on battery and choosing between looking professional and lasting until lunch. Background replacement that holds its edges, voice isolation that removes the corridor, automatic framing that keeps her centered while she reaches for a notebook — all running for six hours without the fans coming up. The bookkeeper. Spreadsheets, an accounting package, email, two monitors, a machine that stays plugged in on the same desk every day. The NPU will sit idle almost permanently. What will actually improve her working life is a second monitor on a decent arm, 16GB of memory so nothing stalls when the accounting package and the browser argue, and a keyboard she can type on all day. Spend the money on the screen and the memory.
The solicitor handling confidential files. Not a heavy video-call user, but everything he touches is privileged. The argument here has nothing to do with speed or battery — it is that transcription, summarization and search can run on the machine without a document ever leaving it. That is a compliance answer as much as a technical one. The NPU earns its place on privacy alone.
The freelance video editor. Exports, color grading, timeline scrubbing. Almost none of that touches the NPU; it is GPU and memory work from start to finish. Some AI-assisted tools inside his editing software will use the accelerator, and that is a genuine small win, but it is nowhere near the top of his list. Buy the graphics card and the RAM. Take the NPU if it comes along.
The four approaches, and how they differ
Four companies are solving this in noticeably different ways, and the difference shows up in what the machines are good at.
Intel — Core Ultra
Intel’s current Core Ultra parts pair a capable NPU with integrated Arc graphics, and the efficient models comfortably clear the Copilot+ threshold — the Core Ultra 7 268V is a 48-TOPS part. Broadest software compatibility, widest choice of machines, and the range spans from efficient ultrabook chips to full desktop processors. This is the default for most Windows buyers, and it is the family you will find in most business laptops on the shelf.
AMD — Ryzen AI
AMD’s Ryzen AI line puts a strong NPU alongside genuinely good integrated graphics — historically AMD’s advantage over Intel at the same price. If you want a machine that handles light creative work without a discrete GPU, this is a sensible place to look. The naming is the difficulty: Ryzen AI parts carry the NPU, while plenty of current, perfectly good Ryzen chips do not. The Ryzen 7 7730U is a capable previous-generation processor with no Copilot+ NPU at all, and it still ships in machines being sold today.
Qualcomm — Snapdragon X
The efficiency play. Snapdragon X Elite is a 12-core part with a 45-TOPS NPU, and it is built on ARM rather than x86 — the same broad architectural approach Apple took. The result is exceptional battery life and fanless designs that stay genuinely silent. The trade-off is software: most things run, some specialist and older Windows applications still do not run natively. Check your critical applications before you commit.
Apple — Neural Engine
Apple has shipped a Neural Engine for years without ever marketing it as an AI PC, and it takes a different route. Rather than a separate accelerator working alongside conventional memory, Apple Silicon pairs the Neural Engine with unified memory — a single fast pool the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine all share. For running local AI models on a laptop, that is a genuine structural advantage: the M5 can hold larger models in fast memory than a comparable Windows machine can. Apple does not quote TOPS in the same marketing language, which makes direct comparison awkward, and Apple Silicon is macOS only.

How to read a spec sheet without being sold to
Five things worth checking, in the order they matter.
1. Is there an NPU at all?
“AI-ready”, “AI-enhanced” and “built for AI” are marketing phrases with no fixed meaning. Copilot+ PC is a defined term with a 40-TOPS requirement behind it. If a listing avoids that phrase while talking about AI constantly, that is usually the answer.
2. Check the TOPS figure, then stop caring about it
Confirm it clears 40 if Copilot+ features matter to you. Beyond that, the difference between 45 and 48 will not be visible in your working day.
3. Memory matters more than the NPU
16GB is the realistic floor for a machine you intend to keep. AI features consume memory alongside everything else, and this is the upgrade that will actually change how the machine feels in two years. If the choice is an NPU or more RAM, take the RAM.
4. Watch the generation gap
Retailers sell current and previous-generation machines side by side, often at similar prices. A previous-generation chip can be an excellent buy — it simply will not have a Copilot+ NPU. That is a fair trade if you know you are making it. It is an unpleasant surprise if you do not.
5. Decide whether it changes your shortlist
For most home-office buyers it should not. Screen quality, keyboard, memory, storage and battery will affect your working life every single day. The NPU affects a handful of features, some of which you may never turn on.
Three mistakes we see people make
These come up often enough to be worth naming.
Paying a premium for the badge rather than the machine
Two laptops, similar money. One has a Copilot+ NPU and a cramped 8GB of memory. The other has no NPU and 16GB with a better screen. The badge makes the first one look like the modern choice, and for almost every buyer it is the worse machine — it will feel slower within a year, and the feature that justified the premium will sit idle most days. Specification beats badge, every time.
Assuming a new machine automatically has one
It does not follow. Retailers sell current and previous-generation stock side by side, and a perfectly good chip released a generation ago simply predates the requirement. Neither fact contradicts the other. The mistake is assuming that because a machine is on sale today, it clears a line drawn last year.
Buying an NPU for something a GPU does
This is the expensive one. Someone who edits video, works in 3D, or wants to run large local models buys a thin machine with an impressive TOPS figure and no meaningful graphics, then finds their actual work no faster at all. The NPU is not a small graphics card. It is a different tool for a different job, and no amount of TOPS turns it into one.
What about Macs, Chromebooks and Linux?
Copilot+ is a Windows program, which leaves three sets of buyers wondering where they stand.
Macs
Every Apple Silicon Mac has a Neural Engine and has done since the M1. Apple simply never ran an AI PC campaign, so buyers of the same hardware were never told to care. The features it powers — live transcription, subject lifting in Photos, on-device dictation, the Apple Intelligence layer — are built into macOS rather than badged and counted. There is no TOPS figure to compare and no 40-TOPS gate to clear. If you are choosing between Macs, the Neural Engine is not a variable: they all have one, and the newer chips have a faster one.
Chromebooks
Increasingly shipping with NPUs, and ChromeOS is adding on-device features to use them. For the price bracket most Chromebooks live in, the accelerator matters less than the memory and the screen — the same advice as everywhere else, only more so.
Linux
The hardware works; the software support is uneven and moving. Vendor drivers and frameworks exist, and if you run Linux you already know to check specific hardware support before buying rather than assuming it. Nothing about an NPU is Windows-only at the silicon level, but the polished consumer features very much are.
The security question worth asking
On-device AI is usually presented as straightforwardly better for privacy, and mostly it is. The nuance is worth a paragraph because it affects anyone with a compliance obligation.
Processing locally means your data is not sent to a third party, is not stored on someone else’s infrastructure, and is not subject to that provider’s retention policy or a change to their terms. For confidential work, that is a meaningful improvement over a cloud service, and it is the single strongest argument for this hardware in professional settings.
The nuance is that local and private are not identical. A feature that indexes everything on your screen keeps that index on your machine — which is better than uploading it, and is still a searchable record of your work sitting on a device that could be lost, stolen or examined. That is a different risk, not an absent one.
Practical position: on-device processing is the better default for confidential work, and features that create a persistent record of your screen deserve a deliberate decision rather than a default. If your organization has a data-handling policy, this is squarely the kind of thing it exists to cover.
How to think about the next few years
A short section, deliberately, because honest forecasting is thin on detail.
What is reasonably safe to say: NPUs are becoming standard equipment rather than a premium option. The pattern follows every other component that started as a differentiator — discrete sound cards, then Wi-Fi, then SSDs — and ended up simply included. Within a couple of buying cycles the presence of an NPU will be as unremarkable as the presence of Bluetooth, and nobody will build a marketing campaign around it.
What is not safe to say is what the software will do with it. The features that exist today are useful and narrow. The ones being promised are neither guaranteed to arrive nor guaranteed to need the hardware you can buy now. The 40-TOPS threshold is a floor Microsoft set at a particular moment, and floors have a way of rising.
Which leads to the only future-proofing advice we are willing to give: buy for what a machine does the day you unbox it. A laptop that does your job well today with generous memory and a screen you enjoy looking at will still be doing your job in four years. One bought for a feature list that has not shipped yet may not be.
The bottom line
An NPU is a real piece of hardware doing a real job, and the video-call improvements alone justify it if you live on calls. It is not a performance upgrade, it will not make your machine faster, and it is not a reason on its own to spend more or to reject a laptop you otherwise like.
Buy the machine with the right screen, keyboard, memory and battery for your work. If it happens to carry a Copilot+ NPU — and in 2026 most current mid-range machines do — treat that as a welcome bonus rather than the reason.

Is an AI PC the same thing as a Copilot+ PC?
No, and the difference matters. “AI PC” is a loose marketing term any manufacturer can use. “Copilot+ PC” is a defined Microsoft specification that requires an NPU of at least 40 TOPS. Every Copilot+ PC is an AI PC; plenty of machines described as AI PCs are not Copilot+ PCs.
Can I add an NPU to a computer I already own?
It depends which question you are really asking, and the two have different answers.
Can you add an integrated NPU, the kind a Core Ultra, Ryzen AI or Snapdragon X has? No. That accelerator is fabricated into the processor package itself. There is no socket for it, no upgrade path, and no firmware update that creates one. For that, it means a new machine.
Can you add AI acceleration hardware to a PC? Yes — that part is real. Dedicated AI accelerator cards exist in PCIe and M.2 form, from makers such as Hailo and Google Coral, and they genuinely run inference workloads. What they will not do is make Windows report your machine as having an integrated NPU, and they will not unlock Copilot+ features, because that badge is tied to the processor’s own accelerator rather than to any AI hardware being present.
Those cards are aimed at a different job: developers, robotics, computer-vision systems and edge AI deployments where you want inference running on a specific device. If your goal is Windows Studio Effects on your laptop, a Coral module is not the route. If your goal is running a vision model on a machine in a workshop, it may be exactly the route — and it is worth knowing the option exists rather than being told a flat no.
Will my current laptop become obsolete without one?
No. Windows runs perfectly well without an NPU, and the features that require one are additions rather than replacements. A machine bought in the last few years with adequate memory has years of useful life left.
Does an NPU improve battery life?
Indirectly, and only if you use AI features. Running those tasks on the NPU rather than the CPU or GPU uses considerably less power for the same job. If you never use them, the NPU sits idle and changes nothing.
Do I need one for a desktop?
Less than for a laptop. The NPU’s core advantage is power efficiency, which matters most on battery. A plugged-in desktop can afford to use the CPU or GPU. Copilot+ features still require the NPU, so it depends entirely on whether you want them.
Is 16 TOPS enough?
For Copilot+ features specifically, no — that is below Microsoft’s 40-TOPS requirement. Lower-rated NPUs still accelerate some AI tasks in individual applications, but they will not unlock the Windows feature set.

The opposite, if you use AI features. Running them on the NPU rather than the CPU or GPU produces considerably less heat for the same work — which is why several of these machines are fanless. Idle, it makes no difference at all.
Is an AI PC worth it for a student?
The features that help most are live captions and transcription, which are genuinely useful for lectures. Beyond that, the same rule applies harder than usual on a student budget: memory, battery and a screen you can look at all day will matter far more than the accelerator.
My machine says “AI-ready” — is that a Copilot+ PC?
Almost certainly not. “AI-ready”, “AI-enhanced” and “built for AI” carry no defined requirement. If it qualified, the listing would say Copilot+ PC, because that badge is worth more to the seller. Check for a Copilot+ section in Windows Settings for a definitive answer.
The jargon, translated
Every term you will meet on a listing, in plain English.

| Core Ultra | Intel’s current processor family. The efficient models carry NPUs that clear the Copilot+ threshold. |
| Ryzen AI | AMD’s NPU-equipped line. Note the AI — a Ryzen chip without it has no Copilot+ NPU. |
| Snapdragon X | Qualcomm’s ARM-based family. Excellent battery life and silent designs; check your specialist software runs natively. |

Every hardware figure quoted here comes from a machine we have already researched and written up for another Smart Tech Buying guide, with the specification taken from the live product listing at the time of writing rather than from a manufacturer’s press material. We have not quoted benchmark scores, because we do not run a benchmark lab and will not pretend otherwise. Where we compare, we say plainly that the comparison is relative and directional.
